Vodafone Business and Swansea University deliver improved Vodafone 5G+

Swansea Millennium Bridge at sunset.

Ally Stevens,

Introduction of fast Vodafone 5G and reliable 4G will help provide education and healthcare services across two campuses.

Swansea University is now benefitting from faster Vodafone 5G+ (also known as 5G Standalone or 5G SA) as part of an ongoing partnership between the university, Swansea Bay City Deal and Vodafone Business, the enterprise arm of VodafoneThree.

Thanks to network upgrades – including improved Vodafone 4G across both Singleton and Bay campuses – those working, studying or visiting the university are now enjoying faster data speeds, as well as more reliable and better-quality voice calls.

The rollout of Vodafone 5G+ will support the university’s ‘living lab’, including its research on health, fitness and wellbeing devices and sensors.

“The enhanced 5G connectivity across Swansea University’s campuses opens exciting opportunities, especially for our health, wellbeing and sport research. Faster, more reliable mobile networks mean we can collect and analyse data in real time, enabling more effective innovation. As well as benefitting research, this upgrade has the potential to improve patient care, supporting remote monitoring and digital health services.”

Prof. Keith Lloyd, Director, the National Institute for Sport & Health

Singleton Hospital and Morriston Hospital are also starting to benefit, with patients, staff and visitors seeing faster mobile data speeds, improving day‑to‑day working and visiting experiences across the hospital estate.

As a result, clinicians can begin exploring how this improved connectivity supports digitally-enabled care models, such as remote patient monitoring and community‑based care.

In turn, allowing more patients to receive high‑quality care at home by supporting patient self‑management tools, helping to reduce trips to hospital and any associated potential patient stress or anxiety. Meanwhile, it also frees up clinical time, making more effective use of NHS resources.

“Vodafone 5G+ delivers endless connectivity benefits, offering businesses a powerful network that can be built around their needs. Swansea University is now in a great position to start taking full advantage of this and we look forward to seeing how it will continue to support the campuses and our customers working, studying or visiting there.”

Shali Thilakan, Business Sales Director, VodafoneThree

The news comes as VodafoneThree continues to invest across the wider Swansea area, with Vodafone 5G+ now available to more than 75% of the city’s population.

Network upgrades across Swansea are also giving Vodafone and Three customers access to the best available coverage, at no extra cost.

The work is part of a part of VodafoneThree’s current UK-wide £11 billion investment programme, which is helping to strengthen connectivity for communities, businesses and public services across the country.
